The Monte Negro Canyon is the most visited in São José dos Ausentes, a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme south of Brazil.
Next to the canyon is also Pico Monte Negro, which is the highest point in Rio Grande do Sul, with 1403 meters of altitude.
The fields at the top of the mountain end abruptly at the edge of the canyon. On a clear day, you can see the sea.
In the place there are several springs, where the water springs in the middle of the stones and soon falls on the cliff.
The canyon is located 42 km from the center of São José dos Ausentes and 21 km from the district of Silveira.
Vehicle access is via a dirt road.
From the parking lot, walk 700m to the edge of the canyon.
You can walk another 1 km along the edge to have several points of view.
