São José dos Ausentes is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its latitude and altitude make the municipality one of the coldest in the country
It has an area of 1175.4 km² and its population in 2019 was 3,527 inhabitants.
The city is known for its harsh winter by Brazilian standards, which has temperatures below zero. The municipality has constant frost and snow almost every year (usually very light and on a few days of the season).
"Designed" by Campos de Cima da Serra and Aparados da Serra canyons, São José dos Ausentes has beautiful scenery such as Pico do Monte Negro, the highest point in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, at 1,403 meters, Cachoeirão dos Rodrigues and the Stone Mangroves.
